Demon Haunted World

"We cannot afford to live in a culture that doesn't use the power in its hands with the kind of rationality that produced it in the first place.

But right now, instead of reason, a lot of people are making use of wishes, dreams, mantras, and incantations. They're trying to heal themselves with crystals, magnets, and herbs with unknown properties. People will offer you a pill made from the leaf of an obscure plant and say, 'Take it -- it can't hurt you; it's natural...'

So is deadly nightshade."
-- Alan Alda in June 2002 Caltech commencement speech "Finding Feynman," included as the Epilogue of "Classic Feynman," edited by Ralph Leighton, pg.502, WW Norton & Company Inc, New York, 2006.

Classic Feynman includes the CD "Los Alamos From Below," in which Richard Feynman recounts various anecdotes from his time working in the Manhattan Project during WWII (2/6/75, UC Santa Barbara). Well worth a listen.
